I should be used to this after four years, but I continue to be surprised by President Obama’s hypocrisy. While campaigning for the presidency, Mr. Obama criticized then-President Bush for asking Congress to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. But President Obama has asked, in fact insisted, that Congress raise the debt limit more than once. President Obama claims he wants to protect the environment. We all are supposed to pay (through our tax dollars) for the research and development of numerous forms of green energy while the President flies around the US campaigning for his version of various legislation when video conferences would be more economical and environmentally friendly.
Now the President, who said in 2010 that “the voices of ordinary Americans are being drowned out“ by the privileged few, who said he would have the most transparent administration in history, will allow wealthy donors to an organization that promotes his agenda to have quarterly personal meetings with him. Of course, these people won’t express any opinions on issues during these meetings, and if they did, the President could not possibly be influenced by their $500,000 donations. (!)
Both conservative FOX News and far left-leaning MSNBC have questioned whether this is a good idea. “It looks like the White House is selling access” – Chuck Todd.
Organizing for Action is a reincarnation of Obama for America, the President’s reelection committee. The new OFA is calling itself a social welfare organization and is an official 501(c)4 non-profit.
It is difficult to say whether this pattern of actions by President Obama is true hypocrisy or a worldview that believes in situational ethics. In the former a person’s claims of high principles are just for show; they serve a selfish purpose. The latter is the belief that what is right or wrong depends on the circumstances – basically whatever is best for the person at the moment. Either way, Americans cannot trust this President to live up to what he says or do what is best for the country.
