On Wednesday, while debating parts of President Obama’s jobs plan, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, “It’s very clear that private-sector jobs have been doing just fine; it’s the public-sector jobs where we’ve lost huge numbers.”
When Senator Reid was back here in Nevada for the summer Congressional recess, he apparently did not visit his constituents. While some teachers, police and firefighters have been laid off, with 14% unemployment in Nevada, many have also been laid off from the private sector. The casino-tourist industry is by far the largest employer in Nevada and the poor economy was felt by that sector early in the recession. My sister lost her upper level hotel-casino job 22 months ago.
In the last election, Senator Reid only won in the most populous counties, which also have the most unemployed. Maybe after yesterday’s statement, they will realize that Reid is not going to do anything to create jobs for them. Unfortunately they didn’t find out sooner, because now we have him in office five more years.
